Today is the Winter Solstice which marks the first day of winter.

For many, this symbolizes dark and cold times ahead, with only the anticipation of summer to push you forward. In the Taoist perspective, this dark and cold time is something to be respected and celebrated. The Winter Solstice is considered the most yin time of the year and is depicted as “yin within yin”.

During this time it is important to focus on nourishing ourselves and refilling our reserves. The longer nights encourage us to stay home and get more rest as well as to reflect upon on the past in order to prepare for the future.

As the opposing force of that yang summer energy, winter is a time that we turn inwards to integrate everything from the previous year and emerge with a stronger version of ourselves come spring.

Winter is also related to the Water element and its corresponding organ the Kidney. It is considered one of the deepest and wisest energies in our bodies and is related to both your ancestral genetics as well as your reproductive health.

Some great ways to support yourself during this time are to:

Have more soups and broths this winter - bone broth is especially good right now because of the bone and marrow’s connection to the Kidneys. You can use it in your soup or just drink it plain!

Treat your feet - the Kidney channel starts at the bottom of your feet and goes up the inside of your leg. Keeping your feet warm, foot massages, and foot soaks are all important rituals to support your water element, especially if you suffer from low back pain!

Say NO more often - you don’t have to do everything that you are presented with this season. Learn to listen to your body and recognize when it’s better to stay home and rest. The more you do this the more energy you’ll have to say yes this summer!

Prioritize self care - regular restorative habits like meditation, yin yoga, and acupuncture are all great ways to nourish your body and your mind.

Acupuncture helps with many Kidney related imbalances such as low back pain, knee pain, menstrual disorders, infertility, and urinary disturbances. If you suffer from these or any other chronic condition, now is a great time to tend to your body’s needs in order to live a smooth and happy life.
